Frazer-Nash Principal Consultant, Howard Lungley, was recently invited to share his expertise on the Royal United Services Institute’s (RUSI) new podcast series, ‘Greening Defence’.
The series is exploring how the UK defence sector is working to respond to the challenges and evolving security risks associated with climate change, noting ‘when discussing climate change, the focus is often on decarbonisation rather than sustainability.’
Howard contributed his ideas to ‘Episode 2: A Sustainable Defence?’, where he discussed why sustainability is important to the defence sector with Lt Gen Richard Wardlaw, Chief of Defence Logistics & Support and the episode’s host, Major Alistair Beard, Chief of the General Staff’s visiting fellow within the Military Science team at RUSI.
In 2019, the UK was the first major economy to pass a legally binding net zero target by 2050 - with a new interim target to reduce emissions by 78 per cent from 1990 levels by 2035. This commitment is now a legal obligation.
On his invitation, Howard commented:

Howard is Frazer-Nash’s sustainability lead, with over 20 years’ experience advising public and private sector organisations on sustainability. At Frazer-Nash, he advises clients on net zero and decarbonisation strategy, including working with various areas of the MOD, and was a key contributor to the Sustainable Defence Support white paper published in August 2020. He is also leading the development of Frazer-Nash’s climate strategy and science-based targets aligned to 1.5°C.
Prior to joining Frazer-Nash, Howard was a Head of Strategy at BT Group, where he was responsible for BT’s operational decarbonisation strategy. He co-developed many aspects of BT’s award-winning carbon strategy, conducted the company’s first assessment of climate risk, managed a portfolio of carbon-reducing products and services, and established the company’s electric vehicle strategy. Prior to BT Howard held sustainability-focused management consultancy roles at GHD, KPMG and Arthur D. Little.
