Frazer-Nash has been awarded funding from Innovate UK’s Sustainable Innovation Fund (SIF) to test out a new concept in wind farm control.
The funding will enable the company to explore ways in which wind farm developers and operators can get more green energy from their existing assets.
Brian Gribben, who is technical lead for the project said:
“This Sustainable Innovation Fund award will enable us to test out our new concept in wind farm control, which could help wind farm developers and operators to generate more energy with the same assets.
“There has been a lack of understanding of how temperature variations in the atmosphere can affect wind farm performance. This has now improved to the point where we can consider using that knowledge to extract more energy. While communication and control technologies exist to collectively manage wind turbines, our project will explore how energy yield could be increased by controlling a wind farm differently in response to those variations."
The Sustainable Innovation Fund has awarded £134 million shared between over 1000 companies across the UK, to allow organisations to develop ground-breaking ‘green innovations’ that have sustainability at their heart. Each successful company will receive up to £175,000 to accelerate commercial production of their innovative products and services.
