Two research associate roles are available at the University of Bristol, supporting a collaborative programme of research led by Frazer-Nash Consultancy.
The Research Associate in Structural Integrity will be using the latest experimental techniques to understand the fracture behaviour of thick and thin section safety-critical welded components in future nuclear reactor designs.
Focussing on laser and electron beam welded components, the researcher will investigate the influence of the residual stress induced by these joining technologies on their structural integrity. The research will deliver high quality experimental data to the numerical analyses that will be undertaken by Frazer Nash Consultancy.
The Research Associate in Mechanistic Weld Modelling will focus on laser and electron beam welding processes, examining their influence on residual stress development in safety-critical components. The researcher will compare the results of her/his mechanistic modelling with those estimated from state of the art thermo-mechanical modelling carried out by Frazer-Nash's industrial partners.
Obtaining high quality models will require a deep understanding of the welding procedure undertaken by our research collaborator. The Research Associate will liaise with them to obtain sufficient information required for delivery of reliable, validated, and verified models.
