Alison Saxby

Group Leader – Built Environment

I lead a group that delivers solutions with a Civil/Structural bias. We focus on technical assurance applied in Civil/Structural Engineering projects and at the interfaces where the civil aspects meet other (Mechanical or EC&I) disciplines. We understand the characterisation and assessment of withstand to external hazards, material performance, structural behaviour, and the implications for an asset’s integrity.

My biography

With twenty years' experience working in engineering consultancy, I lead the Built Environment team within Asset Integrity – supporting clients facing a variety of complex challenges regarding their civil/structural assets, or interfaces. I also provide technical oversight and leadership for multi-disciplinary teams providing safety analysis and engineering substantiation to facilities operating in highly regulated industries.

Core to my role is architecting solutions to muti-facetted problems. Whether in my personal areas of specialism relating to the robustness of a nuclear safety cases or structural design and substantiation, or for the wider group, I’m always aiming to ensure well thought out solutions and efficient working across a multi-disciplinary space.

Within the Built Environment group, our particular expertise is in assuring the safety of structures exposed to conventional and extreme hazards and conditions, such as earthquakes, blast, impact, wind, high and low temperatures and corrosive substances.

We work closely with colleagues within Asset Integrity and the wider business, predominantly providing input to, and validation of, structural and seismic aspects.

Our integrated teams establish load conditions, develop understanding of the material performance and structural response, and can deliver effective design and life extension solutions, typically looking beyond code considerations. We have professionally qualified staff who are experienced in a range of structural analysis techniques. We use both traditional methods and latest technologies and have a broad range of technical and practical experience across many industrial applications. I have a great team working on an even greater variety of projects supporting clients from concept to decommissioning stages of asset life, covering initial requirement definition, design, emergent challenges through-life, and overall independent review or cost benefit assessment.

Through my career I’ve been privileged to provide validation for a huge variety of assets. Examples include fairground rides, process plant, portal frame structures, gantries, operational facilities, propulsion systems, airframe structures, rolling stock, and rail-side structures. This is in addition to my safety case work, involving engineering review and compliance, for multiple operational facilities. I am grateful for the variety of my opportunities through consultancy, and ability to transfer and apply knowledge to bring about improvement in so many applications.
