Electrical Distribution Architecture Study of the Future Surface Combatant
-
Why Frazer-Nash?
Frazer-Nash plays a significant role in providing engineering services for naval platforms and systems to support the MoD, its Prime Contractors and suppliers
The Brief
The Future Surface Combatant (FSC) is the ship that will replace the UK’s current fleet of Type 22 and Type 23 frigates over the next 12 years. Frazer-Nash was recently contracted by the MoD to complete an Electrical Distribution Architecture Study (EDAS) of the future warship. The EDAS generated and compared concept designs for the electrical distribution system of the FSC.
Process
Our study addressed options covering both AC and DC systems, configured as a tree structure or zonal configuration. It also incorporated a multi-criteria assessment to provide advice to the Naval Design Partnership (NDP), based on the opinion of the key stakeholders. It compared the benefits and shortfalls of each of the options with their associated through-life costs.
Outcome
We provided guidance to the NDP on which electrical distribution architectures to take forward into the concept design and assessment phases.
