We have developed our own in-house process that allows us to create a representative turbine based on a reference design that can be of relevant fidelity across relevant project stages to the developer (i.e. concept selection / pre-FEED and FEED). An example process is shown below, that seeks to scale up the 15MW rotor to a 20MW design.
Our approach utilises the WISDEM optimisation toolbox available from NREL and provides an upsized rotor (blades and blade aerodynamics) and suitable tower model based on the uprated design parameters. Throughout this process we also place significant focus on the impact of the controller and how the controller is tuned to account for different turbine configurations i.e. fixed or floating.
We believe that this process provides the requisite level confidence in the WTG model dynamics that the response of additional features can be tested at the right level of fidelity.
